5 Poplar – Mr Long

Hi All,

I hope you’re all well and have been looking after yourselves and your families this week. What have you been up to? I’ve been catching up on a lot of reading – I worked out that I’ve read 8 books since lockdown began. The one I just finished was about cities that become people and fight monsters from another dimension. Really! It was great! Now I’m reading a book all about Henry VIII. Have any of you read any good books lately? Let me know!

I’ve also been working with the other teachers to plan for when when the schools reopen. I hope I get to see you before next year, but I don’t know if that will happen yet. I am going to be making phone calls to everyone in the class over the next week though, so hopefully I’ll get to speak to some of you soon.

I’ve also been playing boardgames – My favourite is one called Wingspan where you collect different birds from all around the world – The cards have lovely drawings of the birds on them and I’ve learned a lot about them from playing it too! What games have you been playing?

Remember, you can stay in touch with me at

I look forward to speaking to you soon,

Mr Long

Hi guys, I hope you’ve all been having a good week!

I’ve been spending my time this week trying to make sourdough bread – it’s a long process and I’m not sure how it’s going to tun out, but we’ll see. I’ve been enjoying the weather when it’s been good and staying and playing Animal Crossing on my Switch when it’s been raining! I’ve also been doing exercise every day – I’m feeling pretty fit and healthy at the moment. This week I plan to go for a bike ride.

Me and my friends have been amusing ourselves by setting silly tasks for ourselves to complete. This week, we had to recreate a famous painting . Here is my attempt – do you recognise it?

Perhaps you could try recreating your own piece of art yourselves?

Stay safe and look after yourselves – If you want to email me, you can contact me at

Hello 5 Pine

How are you this week?

I’m so glad that the lovely weather has come back! I have been enjoying lots of badminton in the garden with my daughters. (although I think they are just trying to get out of doing their home learning!)

This week we have been moving furniture around the house…it is really hard to carry a mattress up the stairs but some how we managed it! We have also been doing more baking, this time it was a delicious chocolate cake with buttercream icing (although I didn’t get to eat much of it as I am fasting during this month of Ramadhan!).

Thank you to Sammy for sending in some pictures of your home learning! I was very impressed with your Viking Longship design! I would love to see what the rest of you have been getting up to!

Send your e-mails to With my name in the subject box

Keep smiling

Hi everyone! I hope you’ve had a good week and have been enjoying the home learning.
I’ve been keeping up with the ukulele. This week, I’ve learnt how to play ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon and ‘Hallelujah’ by Jeff Buckley. My fingers are starting to get blistered and sore which I know you guys are familiar with!
This week I have tried experimenting with cooking some new things. My highlights include perfecting poached eggs for breakfast, baking a chocolate chip banana bread and making a delicious bacon and mushroom risotto. Have you been cooking anything new by yourself or with someone at home?
Most importantly, I’m managing to keep up with my exercise by going on some lovely, country walks and runs, doing some dance routines with Oti Mabuse online, logging on to virtual yoga classes and some workout videos too. How are you all managing to keep active at home?
I am missing you all more and more each week and I’m sure you’re missing being at school with your friends too. We just have to be patient and hope for the best. Remember you can keep in touch with me via the school leavers email account; I hope to hear from you soon.
Take care and remember to keep positive and be kind to those around you.

Mr Long – 5 Poplar,

Hi all! I hope you’ve had a good week and enjoyed weather while it was still nice. I’ve been out for lots of walks in the woods again – went on a mushroom hunt and found loads of different types. I didn’t pick any though.

I’ve been doing lots of socialising with my friends and family – I’m doing a quiz with my brother and my nieces later today, and I’ve also been playing quite a bit of Mario Kart online with my friends. We also have a game where we try to make themed playlists for each other – You have to come up with a list of 10 songs about or related to a particular subject. This week the subject was Colours. Perhaps you’d like to play with your friends and family – and you can always share your playlists with me at – I’d love to know what music you’ve been listening to – I miss watching music videos with you guys!

I hope you are all looking after yourselves and your families and I hope to see you all again soon.

Stay safe,

Mr Long

Hello again!

How has your 2nd week of home learning been going? My girls and I have been baking! We made chocolate chip shortbread and banana muffins, very tasty!

I would love to hear about what you have been up to! If you would like to send me something, perhaps a picture of something you’ve made or a piece of home learning you are proud of, you can send an e-mail to and ask for it to be forwarded to me.

Looking forward to hearing from you all!

Hi guys!
Another week! you’ve done it ! we can do this ! I know some of us are missing being with friends and families even if we can Skype or Facetime or even just chat, I know its not quite the same. But here’s an idea. Why not write the a letter? I know! Pen and paper! What could be nicer than a handwritten letter through the letter box? Sharing news, ideas and even sharing a few jokes. Become pen pals. You could even start a lockdown diary. Just think, you could be reading it to your grandchildren when they ask you how survived that time in history because you are living through a time that will go down in the history books. Remember though, this isn’t forever. It will come to an end and we will be back together in no time at all. Keep smiling. You really are all superhero’s and we are all so proud of you.

I hope you are all enjoying the lovely sunshine and your week 1 home learning packs! What other activities have you been up to? Have you done any baking or cooking? Have you been playing board games or inventing your own fun games?

When I was younger, I used to play treasure hunt with my younger brother and hide clues/riddles all around the house which led to other clues-so much fun!

Which books from the Big book project did you manage to read? Are there any you would recommend? I am currently reading ‘The Garbage King’ It is a story about two boys living in South Africa and the friendship that develops between them. The writing really helps to evoke the time and place the story is set.

What should I read next?

Keep smiling!

Hi everyone, I hope you all enjoyed your Easter break as much as possible in the sunshine! I am thinking of you all a lot and am missing being at school with you.
Over the Easter holidays, I ordered myself a ukulele online and have been continuing the learning we have done together in our ukulele classes with Ms Salmon. I’m having a lot of fun and I’ve perfected Old Town Road and Drunken Sailor! I’m now learning new classic ukulele songs such as Riptide and Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Have any of you managed to try something new at home or found more time to improve on an existing skill?

Hi 5 Poplar,
I hope you are all keeping well – It’s been nice to get some emails from some of you over the last couple of weeks. Thank you to everyone who took the time to write to me and share what you’ve been up too during this strange time. If you want to send me something – pictures of what you’ve been up to, a story you’ve written or just a note to say hi – you can send it to and mark it for Mr Long in the subject line.  Maybe I’ll even share some of what you send me here.
I’ve been keeping busy, planning lessons and talking to other teachers. I’ve also been enjoying the beautiful weather and going out for lots of walks in the woods. This week I saw some deer, pheasants and the bluebells starting to bloom! On top of that I’ve been playing lots of boardgames and listening to lots of music  (This week I’ve been enjoying the new Dua Lipa album and some classic Weezer! – google the video for Buddy Holly if you get the chance!). What have you been listening to?
I hope you are all looking after yourselves and your family, and I can’t wait to see you all again!

Hi Guys!

I hope you are all OK. What a crazy time! I know some of you are missing your friends and family and maybe even school 😅 but you will all look back on this knowing you were superhero’s staying safe and looking after each other. You will all go into the history books!

A good way to look at these strange times is as an adventure… using your survival skills. Finding new ways to keep busy and have fun. I’m sure we will all discover new skills and talents that we never knew we had – maybe cooking, knitting, painting, den building or even novel writing. Whatever they are you are all amazing and we are all so proud of you.

Remember this won’t last forever. We will all be back together before you know it.

Stay safe and look after each other. You are all superstars!!
