Cassiobury Junior School Governing Body
Welcome to the Governors section of our website which aims to provide you with some information on our role, the way we are structured and who sits on the Governing Board.
The role of the governing board is often not well understood. Every grant maintained school, such as ours, has the following core strategic functions:
Establishing the strategic direction of the school, by:
- Setting the vision, values, and objectives for the school
- Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
Holding the headteacher and other leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff, by:
- Appointing the Headteacher
- Monitoring progress towards targets
- Performance managing the Headteacher
- Reviewing the school’s self-evaluation
Ensuring financial probity, by:
- Setting the budget
- Monitoring spending against the budget
- Ensuring value for money is obtained
- Ensuring risks to the organisation are managed
Our role is strategic in nature. The headteacher has operational responsibility for the school and most issues should be raised with the school in the first instance rather than going direct to one of the governors. The governors are proud to work with the Headteacher and the rest of the staff to play a part in developing the children and enabling them to reach their full potential.
The Governing Board meets once or twice a term but the majority of the detailed work takes place within two main committees:
Teaching & Learning Committee. This focuses on:
- Educational assessment
- Safeguarding
- Special Educational Needs / Gifted and Talented
- Pupil Premium / Children Looked After
Resources Committee. This focuses on:
- Pay & Finance
- Buildings
- Health & Safety
- Human Resources
Governors also come into school regularly to understand how the school works and verify the information that they are given.
We aim to ensure that we have the right blend of skills on the governing body and that our governors come from a mix in the community. We have governors who are parents, staff at the school and others from the wider community in order to give us the much-needed blend of experience, background and skills.
