Cassiobury Junior School – Curriculum Statement

At Cassiobury Junior School we are proud to offer a curriculum that is broad and balanced and one which builds on the work of our neighbouring infant school.

Our school vision states that we are, ‘Learning to learn, growing together, ready for the future!’ which means that we aim for a balance of skills, knowledge, social skills and responsibility with the flexibility to respond to events and changing stimuli.

For Maths and English we consult the curriculum provided by the local authority but have also purchased schemes for these subjects. The schemes are there to support the consistency of teaching and learning. Our English scheme, ‘Language and literacy,’ follows on from the ‘Read, Write, Inc,’ scheme used in the infant school. Our Maths scheme is a revised Abacus scheme which is designed to further develop the broadening and deepening elements of the curriculum.

We aim to teach in mixed ability classes, with 3 classes per year group. Where gaps are identified, through regular assessments, then additional ‘booster’ or ‘intervention’ sessions may be assigned to pupils for a short period of support. For longer or more personalised support please see our SEN report here.

The school is in a fantastic location and makes good use of it. We have a wealth of resources on our doorstep and, as part of our trips and outdoor learning, we aim to use: Cassiobury Park and warden, The Grand Union Canal, our local swimming pool, Warner Brothers Studios, Phasels Wood Activity Centre and many more locations.

Parent support is fantastic and in the last year parents have attended trips, built dens, cooked pancakes over camp fires, taught first aid and grown plants.

Pupils have many opportunities to share their learning with their families through: class assemblies, parent consultations, plays and productions, and newsletter updates from celebration assemblies.

In September 2017 we welcomed many new teachers to our team. As part of this period of induction and transition we are reviewing our school curriculum over a term.
